Homemade Ice Cream - The Easy and Fun Way!

In our house, we LOVE ice cream!  We also love fun science projects ... especially ones that end with a tasty reward. What we don't love is being in the mood for a nice bowl of ice cream, only to go to the freezer and find none. So, I came up with the perfect solution for when that happens ~ homemade ice cream that you make in a Ziplock bag in less than 20 minutes. It's a win, win!

Below is a tried and true recipe that my family uses and loves. Not only is it yummy, it is also so much fun to make as a family.

Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup half and half
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • ice
  • 1/4 cup course salt
  • Ziploc bags (1 small, 1 large)

Instructions:

  1. Pour half and half in the small Ziploc bag. Add the vanilla and sugar.
  2. Seal the bag tightly and make sure to get any air out.
  3. Fill the large Ziploc bag 1/2 full with ice and add the salt.
  4. Place the small bag inside of the large bag and add more ice to the top. Seal the large bag.
  5. Shake the bag for 6 minutes - longer if ice cream doesn't seem to be set enough. (Note: we wrap the bag in a dish towel, because the salt will make the ice very cold for little hands.)
  6. Once done, take the small bag out and rinse with cold water. Be sure to get the top seal area to prevent salt from getting into the ice cream when you open the bag.
  7. Scoop ice cream into bowls and add desired toppings. Enjoy!  (You can add chocolate syrup while still in bag and stir to make chocolate ice cream.)

(Note: Each batch makes 2 small servings. We make 2 batches for our family of 4 ... and each girl likes to make their own.)😉
